Getting home
We all know it’s dangerous to get behind the wheel when you’ve been drinking. Not only that — it’s illegal. Having one sober friend as a designated driver is a lot better than risking a fatal collision, and a taxi home costs a lot less than a DUI conviction! Here are some options for ending your night right:
Designated driver
Take turns with your friends being the designated driver, or “DD.” Thank the DD by buying that person a non-alcoholic beverage at some point during your outing!
If you’re the designated driver, avoid alcohol for the entire evening so you can be ready to drive people at any time if necessary. When you drop people off at the end of the night, wait until the person is safely inside before driving away. |
Bus and shuttle
The Whatcom Transportation Authority runs many buses through downtown and to neighborhoods where students usually live.
Also, your student fees at Western pay for a bus that runs through campus, downtown and the Sehome area late at night. Anyone with a current student ID may take the WWU Student Shuttle and bring one guest along for the ride. Click here for more information, including the shuttle’s schedule. |
Walking
If you live close to downtown, walking home is a great option as long as you are safe about it. Many of these tips also apply to walking around at night in general, so keep them in mind as you bar-hop, too.

Taxis, etc.
We don’t always have a sober friend around to drive us home, and the student shuttle isn’t always running. To be ready for those times, program these numbers into your cellphone:
